Bonisile and Theo from #TeamTSR recently lectured to the University of Cape Town, Graduate School of Business MBA classes. Business Schools are currently experiencing a disruption of their own due to the current Covid-19 pandemic that we find ourselves in.

Covid-19 has shaken up executive education forever.

The advent of the ‘hologram professor’ will become more pronounced as well as the use of Artificial Intelligence / Technology and Automation in the delivery of course content at leading business schools.

#TeamTSR would like to extend a warm welcome to Catherine Duggan who formally started as the new Director of the UCT GSB on 1 Sep 2020 and to Maurice Radebe who will take up the position of Head of School at WITS on 1 January 2021. Some great news!

We too, would like to sincerely thank Azvir Rampursad, Manager: Corporate Partnerships – Graduate School of Business University of Cape Town and Charisse Drobis [Head of Career Management Services at WITS Business School] for extending this platform to Bonisile and Theo.

Before our lectures, we ran a survey with some already qualified MBA’s candidates to help unlock some challenges for MBA students.  Herewith a sample of our questions and feedback received:

Responses to this were as follows:

  • MBA Grads are not lacking in any skills; they just don’t sell their MBA strongly enough in interviews
  • Companies out there that are hiring MBA’s grads need to be educated in what an MBA graduate is and what an MBA graduate brings
  • Most of the content of an MBA is a mile wide and an inch deep
  • Individuals needs to sell and evidence learnings more effectively in interviews
  • Expecting a complete career change after an MBA is unrealistic in this market
  • MBA’s produce good general managers; not functional experts
  • Management Consulting – the industry takes specialists and turns them into generalists by placing them on a multitude of different projects to solve
  • Once a generalist you can move more easily into a different industry or specialisation

Having an MBA does not make you a legitimate disruptor in a business!  Arrive with your new ideas and a healthy dose of humility.  Remember that corporates changes slowly.  This requires patience, hard work and support to push change.
