Recently, we were selected by a Tier 1 international management consulting firm to design and deliver career transition coaching for their senior consultants seeking new career trajectories. What I discovered challenged everything I thought I knew about confidence and self-perception in the professional services space.
The Paradox of Excellence
These are individuals who advise Fortune 500 CEOs and solve complex strategic challenges, yet when it comes to their own career transitions, they face a fascinating paradox: highly skilled professionals who remain surprisingly uncertain about their market worth.
The irony? They’re among the most sought-after talent in the marketplace. Strategy consultants possess a unique combination of analytical rigour, problem-solving capability, and business acumen that makes them incredibly valuable across industries—from private equity and corporate strategy to fintech and transformation roles.
The Real Challenges for Senior Professionals
Through my coaching sessions, several consistent patterns emerged:
1. The CV & Personal Branding Gap Most required significant help repositioning their consulting experience for corporate environments. Translating “client engagement excellence” into language that resonates with hiring managers outside the consulting bubble requires a complete narrative shift.
2. Network Reactivation Struggles Many had strong professional networks but had never leveraged them strategically for career transitions. I spent considerable time teaching them how to widen their circles, secure exploratory coffee chats with industry leaders, and navigate today’s complex recruitment landscape.
3. Beating the Digital Gatekeepers With recruitment increasingly moving toward self-sourcing and AI-driven screening, I’ve had to help these talented individuals learn how to beat LinkedIn algorithms and human gatekeepers—skills never covered in their MBA programmes.
The Vulnerability Advantage
Perhaps the most powerful shift I’ve witnessed is helping professionals move away from the mindset of “asking for help.” Instead, I teach them to frame conversations as “seeking insights” or “seeking mentorship.”
Here’s what’s fascinating: when high-performers show strategic vulnerability and genuine curiosity about their own career journey, it creates more authentic engagement within their networks. The response rates to their outreach have been remarkable.
The Results Speak Volumes
The feedback has been incredibly rewarding for me. From strategy consultants to medical professionals making industry transitions, the response has been consistent. As one recent client shared:
“From our very first interaction he was responsive, insightful, and genuinely invested in my career transition. Within hours of reaching out… he provided clear, actionable insights on networking, refining my personal brand, and navigating the job market effectively.”
Another participant noted:
“His nuggets of wisdom and profound industry expertise have truly been transformative for me, offering fresh perspectives and actionable strategies… His approach seamlessly combines decades of experience, empathy, and integrity.”
Most participants are now securing regular exploratory conversations with leaders we’ve identified as strategic connections, and several have successfully transitioned into roles that leverage their expertise in new environments—spanning from consulting to healthcare leadership, private equity, and corporate strategy roles.
Why This Matters Beyond Consulting
This experience reinforced something I’ve observed throughout my 28 years in executive search and talent advisory: technical competence doesn’t automatically translate to career transition competence. Even the most accomplished professionals benefit from strategic coaching when navigating major career shifts.
Whether you’re a senior professional looking to transition, or a leader in any professional services firm, the fundamentals remain constant: know your worth, articulate your value clearly, and leverage your network strategically.
Ready for Your Next Chapter?
If you’re a senior professional contemplating your next career move, or if your organisation needs specialised career transition support for departing talent, I’d welcome a conversation about how strategic coaching can accelerate successful outcomes.
After all, even the best strategists benefit from having a strategy for their own careers.
In addition to this article, I will share some of the career strategy course content and outline for anyone interested.
